FAQS
Why study abroad in Dublin for a semester or academic year?
Six reasons:
1. Location/accessibility: Dublin is only a 5-6 hour flight from the US east coast. Which is about the same as the US east coast to the west coast.
2. Although ACD staffers are always available to students, you’ll learn to live independently and grow as an individual much more than you would living on an American college campus.
3. Dublin and Ireland are very safe.
4. The City is very walkable and public transportation readily available. Dublin is also the Gateway to Europe (with easy and short) flights to the Continent.
5. Culture: This lively City features an incredible food, music and performing arts scene. It’s so easy to find your favourite local (pub) to enjoy.
6. The Irish people: The City has a large and diverse student population, with a great social scene. And the Irish have a long-standing reputation for being welcoming, kind and genuinely hospitable.
Who can study abroad?
Just about any college student! Check with your school’s study abroad office.
Do I need a visa to study abroad? When should I apply for one?
Yes, if your course-of-study is longer than 90 days. More information is here: https://www.irishimmigration.ie/coming-to-study-in-ireland/what-are-my-study-visa-options/how-to-apply-for-long-term-study-visa/
Do I need to be able to speak a foreign language to study in Dublin?
No. Ireland has two official languages – English and Gaeilge (Gwal-gah). You’ll see both languages on road signs, but will likely only hear Gaeilge in rural towns along the west coast.
If I have problems abroad, what should I do?
Depends on the problem. If it’s regarding your classes or schoolwork, ask your lecturer or ACD’s Director of Academic Support for a chat. If it’s about a roommate or housing issue, bring it up with that Director, too.
